My dad is a waffler... 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 4
So, here's all I know about my family:

I know that my grandparents are not church goers and never talk about it. I know that my other set of grandparents were not church goers and that grandma went more after grandpa died when she became lonely. I know that my parents have never gone to church of their own accord, and the brief time we went was when I was a child and I wanted to check it out.

What I don't know is where my parents stand on issues of religion. My dad used to tell me bible stories when I was very young, and then ask me what I thought of them. Usually it would be replies from me of "That's mean!" or "That's silly!" and then my dad would laugh and say "Isn't it, though?"

I know my dad was a biology professor for some time. I also know that he is very interested in evolution and made sure we had a real education in science growing up.

What I also know is that, very often, my dad goes back and forth from being an atheist to saying that there must be 'something'. I'm not sure what this means, exactly, especially considering he must know that he raised his children to be non-believers, at the very least!

I think that most people are wafflers. They seem to be afraid to take a stance. I've known a few people that have always been secular that felt that it was best to have their children baptized "just in case".

I feel that we (this and other similar communities) are the firm ones; that ones that feel it's ok to take a stance. That's why I feel that we should be sources of information and support for others. They may never wind up being firm in their beliefs, but at least they will know that it is alright to question.
