Bill Van Druten on the MergerWatch Project - Atheists Talk #011 Mar 23, 2008
Views 2734
Favored 130
Even though the American Atheists National Conference is in town, our radio staff gave their time to talk about the dangers of religious dogma being imposed on medical staff and how that can affect patients.  Cynthia Egli talks with Bill van Druten of the Lake Superior Freethinkers on the subject, and covers "ExpelledGate" as well as the American Atheists Conference.

1. Not quite accurate re: pain meds....
I agree with Jim, above. Here is a copy of the directives for anyone interested:
http://www.usccb.org/bishops/ directives.shtml. In fact, they specifically state "Medicines capable of alleviating or suppressing pain may be given to a dying person, even if this therapy may indirectly shorten the person's life so long as the intent is not to hasten death" which opens the door for all forms of palliative and hospice care legally practiced in the US -- other than the option of withholding treatments that relieve suffering primarily by inducing death (i.e. indirect euthanasia).

2. Atheists Talk #11 Mar. 23/08
During the interview with Dr.Bill Van Druten(sp?) I was left with the impression that doctors had to sign a commitment to council patience on the benifits of redemptive suffering and advise them not to take pain killing drugs. It may not have been your intent to portray the directives of the Catholic governing bodies as such but that is the way it came across.
After checking the directives I find that it is not the case and that doctors are expected to help alleviate emotional suffering by councilling redemptive suffering only when pain cannot be alleviated by any means. Please correct this.

3. MP3 quality?
Great shows guys! only one thing - the MP3 quality is appalling. at such low sample rates there are all sorts of "rings" and on some of us listeners the effect is like an added scratching-the-blackboard sound which I personally can't stand for more than a few minutes before I just skip the show and go for a different podcast...

Appreciate your work, excellent programs!
