Campus Atheists Skeptics and Humanists on Atheists Talk #191, Sunday, October 28th, 2012

Campus Atheists, Skeptics and Humanists – more often known as CASH to its members – is an active student group at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and an affiliate of the Secular Student Alliance. CASH has a mission to foster a socially and intellectually engaging community for nontheists, and to promote tolerance and understanding for all, regardless of belief. Through their activities, CASH strives to address negative stereotypes, misconceptions about, and discrimination against nontheists.

Although they have not yet finished the first half of the 2012-2013 school year, CASH has already participated in several events which have garnered them prominent media attention. Early this year CASH partnered with other student groups to protest the disruptive demonstrations of evangelical campus preacher George Edward Smock, aka Brother Jed. Late this September, CASH hosted an "Everyone Draw Mohammed Day" event which protested anti-blasphemy laws and the overreach of religious laws.

This spring, CASH is hosting a large conference called SkepTech, which is drawing big name speakers from the secular community such as PZ Myers, Greta Christina, Hemant Mehta and Zach Weinersmith.

Current CASH board members Bryan Carver and Joshua Brose will join Atheists Talk this Sunday to discuss their experiences with CASH and atheist activism at the University of Minnesota.

"Science Left Behind" Alex Berezow on Atheists Talk #190, Sunday, October 21, 2012

Is it true that progressives are just as anti-science as conservatives? According to Alex Berezow, editor of RealClearScience and associate editor of RealClearReligion, and Hank Campbell, founder of the Science 2.0 network, say they are. From the publisher's description of their book Science Left Behind: Feel-Good Fallacies and the Rise of the Anti-Scientific Left:

To listen to most pundits and political writers, evolution, stem cells, and climate change are the only scientific issues worth mentioning—and the only people who are anti-science are conservatives. Yet those on the left have numerous fallacies of their own. Aversion to clean energy programs, basic biological research, and even life-saving vaccines come naturally to many progressives. These are positions supported by little more than junk-science and paranoid thinking.

Now for the first time, science writers Dr. Alex B. Berezow and Hank Campbell have drawn open the curtain on the left’s fear of science. As Science Left Behind reveals, vague inclinations about the wholesomeness of all things natural, the unhealthiness of the unnatural, and many other seductive fallacies have led to an epidemic of misinformation. The results: public health crises, damaging and misguided policies, and worst of all, a new culture war over basic scientific facts—in which the left is just as culpable as the right.

This Sunday, Berezow joins us on Atheists Talk to discuss his book.

"The God Problem" Howard Bloom on Atheists Talk #189, Sunday, October 14, 2012

Howard Bloom is an extraordinary individual, which might be amusing when one realizes that a vast portion of his interest is the study of groups and system interactions. Bloom is a scientist, an activist, an innovator and a music industry publicist whose success in that arena is credited more to his understanding of mass psychology than of music.

Howard Bloom is a prolific writer whose topics of interest seem to span the entire range of everything from the beginnings of the universe to the future of mankind. His work has been published in well-known journals, magazines and newspapers, and he is the author of four books. Howard Bloom will discuss with Atheists Talk his newly published book The God Problem: How a Godless Cosmos Creates. Like so much of his work, it is difficult to put into any one box. it is a novel, an autobiography, a well-researched history of science. It is story of groups, of thoughts, of science and philosophy. The God Problem is all of these things in parts, but the whole is harder to define. Join us this Sunday to learn more about Howard Bloom and his fascinating new book.

"Debunking David Barton's Jefferson Lies" Chris Rodda on Atheists Talk #188, Sunday, October 7, 2012

What do you do when someone lies publicly and repeatedly about the history of your country? If you're Jon Stewart and that "someone" is evangelical pseudohistorian David Barton, you give him free publicity and a platform while looking vaguely uncomfortable. Luckily, not everyone is Jon Stewart.

Earlier this year, David Barton's book, The Jefferson Lies, was recalled by its publisher after being voted "the least credible history book in print". Much of the research that went into proving Barton was distorting history came from one independent scholar, Chris Rodda, who is also the Senior Research Director for the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. Her book, Liars for Jesus, was released before Barton's. In Liars for Jesus and in a series of videos and blog posts released after Barton's book was published, she immersed herself in the history of the founders. Time and again, she demonstrated that Barton's claim were not just misreadings of the historical documents, but gross misrepresentations of them and sometimes, outright lies.

Rodda recently released the first of her chapter-by-chapter refutations of The Jefferson Lies. This Sunday, she joins us by phone to discuss the audacity of David Barton and the process of defending our country's history.
