Life in a Pre-Feminist world: Shirley White Pearl
Announcing Minnesota Atheists’ January Public Meeting:
Life in a Pre-Feminist World by Dr. Shirley White Pearl
Sunday, January 15th. 1:00pm.
With Donald Trump as our new President, the road towards progression for women is a concern for many. It seems fitting to have someone who has lived through these struggles as our guest speaker. Dr. Shirley White Pearl will present her personal journey from fitting in with the expectations of family, friends and community to where she is now. She will talk about her journey towards living a multicultural progressive lifestyle and about being a feminist in a pre-feminist world.
Born in Marshalltown, IA, Dr. Shirley White Pearl attended Coe College and the University of Iowa, where she received undergraduate degrees in psychology and journalism. She subsequently received a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Iowa, where she developed educational curricula for elementary students, giving them tools for dealing with life’s problems, thus serving as a possible prevention for developing maladjusted behaviors.
Dr. Pearl served as educational director of the children’s unit at Independence Mental Health Hospital in Independence, IA. She later worked with St. Paul Public Schools to develop and administer programs for children with behavioral problems.
Dr. Pearl is the author of two books “The Occasional Man, Travel, Life, and an Uncommon Love,” and “The Marginal Woman, Loving, Living, & Breaking Boundaries in a Pre-Feminist World.” With coauthor Don Challman, Dr. Pearl published a referenced instructional text, Managing Disruptive Behavior in the Elementary School. She resides in St. Paul.

Minnesota Atheists holds elections for the Board of Directors every year. The board of directors consists of: president, associate president, chair, associate chair, secretary, treasurer, and three directors-at large. All positions are up for election with a couple board members glad to refrain from running if someone else runs for their position. If you are interested or would like to know more about a board position, please contact Heather Hegi at chair@mnatheists.org or any other board member.
Nominations will open and close at this event during the Business Meeting before the featured speaker. To be nominated one needs to be nominated by another dues paying member while nominations are open. The nominee does not need to be present to be nominated. To be eligible for office, the nominee must have been a dues paying member for at least one year prior to the date of assuming office, Director-at-Large nominees must have been a member for 6 months prior instead of one year. If you’re interested in being on the board but do not meet these qualifications, consider getting your dues in now so you may qualify next year!
The Elections will take place during the February Business meeting starting at 1:15 p.m. on February 19th at the Southdale Public Library, 7001 York Ave S, Edina. The new board will take effect on March 1, 2017.
