September Public Meeting: Standing Up to Project 2025 and Other Threats to Democracy

In September, we will forego our usual third Sunday meeting to join with our colleagues HumanistsMN to welcome Hemant Mehta, founder and editor of The Friendly Atheist.
The stakes are high in the November elections, with Christian Nationalism on the ballot in races nationwide. Hemant will discuss why it is important for secular voters to mobilize to fight growing threats to democracy, including Project 2025.
Please stick around after the formal program for a special Reception at 4:30 p.m. in the downstairs level. We’ll serve appetizers and drinks and you’ll get a chance to talk to our speaker and other guests.
Project 2025 is an authoritarian blueprint for a right wing administration that is infused with Christian Nationalist ideas. Hemant will tell us more about that plan, while examining the growing role that secular Americans are playing in today’s politics — and what more they could be doing. He will tell us what to expect in the upcoming elections and what demands we can reasonably make.
The Friendly Atheist publishes commentary about religion and politics, centered on atheism. Hemant is also a YouTube creator and podcast co-host. He is a former National Board Certified math teacher in the suburbs of Chicago and continues to coach a nationally competitive public speaking team.
Author of multiple books, including “I Sold My Soul on Ebay,” Hemant also publishes crossword puzzles for the New York Times and Slate, and was a Jeopardy! champion.
We will be in the Upper Assembly Hall on the main (third) floor. Street parking available at both entrances — Mt. Curve entrance (third floor) or Groveland Terrace entrance (first floor — take elevator down the hall to your right up to third floor).
This is in a residential area. Pay attention to parking signs that may restrict where and for how long you can park. There is also paid parking at the nearby Walker Art Center garage.
